We at Emory University believe that teaching and learning should not be limited to the traditional classroom.
Indeed, many courses at Emory feature experiential learning or service learning components where academic study is
combined with real world experiences and/or service activities that address actual community needs. By connecting
theory to practice and providing students with opportunities for analysis and reflection, learning is
enhanced and students acquire a deeper appreciation of how knowledge can be applied to meet critical human needs.
To further these goals, the Office of University-Community Partnerships (OUCP), in collaboration with Emory's
Theory-Practice Learning initiative, maintains a database of courses at Emory
that utilize a theory-practice learning pedagogy and/or incorporate service - or experiential-learning components into
their coursework. In addition, OUCP provides financial support through its Community Partnerships
Mini-Grant Program and graduate teaching assistance through its Community Partnerships Graduate
Fellows Program to aid faculty in the development and execution of theory practice learning and service/experiential
learning elements into their courses.
Our website also provides links to a variety of resources and publications that discuss experiential
and service learning in general and their application in specific disciplines and on selected campuses.
